Actually the tender for Ferdinand looks pretty nicely sculpted. Its that glossy shine that would remind me of dog food and I would want to dull it down somehow till it became wood-like.
Maybe one could add some water to a bit of white glue and paint that on. Or use brown acrylic paint. Or use matte finish clear coat paint.

Here is that Back to the Future train and I think the wood here might not look as nice as Ferdinand’s (after you dulled it down). Or maybe you see it the other way.
I noticed there are tires under the tender for some action gimmick. Does the wood fly off when the train crashes? Or does the wood bounce around while in motion?
A video from Train Tsar Fun shows that the woman rider ejects when it crashes.
