Just when you thought you’d seen pretty much everything, something like this comes along!

The 1988 Plarail I’m Driving the Super Hikari Set badged with an English language sticker for sale in the London posh-peoples’ store Harrods. Currently for sale on Ebay UK from a vendor in Italy.

Original Plarail box also shown for comparison.

Uses the 27 MHz Radio Control frequency band, as commonly used in other RC toys and projects.

I asked this because previous sets like this, I believe were IR’s and the controller always had to ‘see’ the engine and if something was in the way would interrupt the signal or if the engine got to far away. Like the one below. I would think your Super Hikari Set would work much better if its a radio signal. I have always seen the set but I don’t recall if I have ever seen one in action. …

The later infrared Nozomi is originally based off this radio frequency train, the odd three-wheel drive originated here. When the Super Hikari mockup was replaced by the real 300 series, an RF Nozomi appeared in the updated version of this set.

It was changed to infrared for the 1998 set with two remote control switches - the 1995 Voice Command series were the last to use radio frequencies.

Hello Duck, hope you have been well. Thank you for the information and I am surprised because in my limited knowledge of these types of electronics I assumed that a Radio Controlled would be better than Infrared therefore the RC would have replaced the IR. Shows you how much I know. 😒
