Hi Guys (and Gals if you're out there),

I was just wondering if anyone here knows if it is possible to source new motors for the Tomy era Thomas loco's? I've already done the usual and checked on EBay but didn't see anything listed there. I know the probable answer is to canibalise one engine to fix another etc... and it will probably come to that in the end. But you never know unless you ask 🙂

They see to do quite well. I did have one that I over heated with the soldering iron and the terminal fell off, but the run quiet and are quite fast. Hope this helps. This seller has various size lots of them too. Thanks.

Hundreds of them on Ebay UK, for example.

Cheers Chris, I wasn't aware they were just standard generic small motors as I've not yet disassembled a motor housing in one of the engines. If they are these types it will not be an issue finding them 🙂

If your problem needs a complete fix, you can find the whole motor housing gears and all sometimes on Ebay UK. Then all you need to do is switch out the whole unit which is very easy. I have bought a few from ambers-alcove2008 in the past. It doesn't look like she has any listed now but maybe she has more coming. She is very nice and it may be worth it to drop her a note. There may be other sellers in the UK that sell these that I am not aware of to. If you do manage to find the whole replacement unit, don't through away the old one. Use it to practice on disassembling and reassembling it and save all the working parts for future repairs on other trains.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, I'm now researching options, disassembling the whole unit and replacing a motor holds no real fear for me (I'm used to tinkering a bit anyway) and I've had a look at some of UCW's videos and it seems quite straightforward.

I've also got some ideas about glazing and lighting some of the bullet trains as well 🙂
