Alright I took him apart and there's indeed a split gear inside the gearbox. I haven't taken apart the gearbox itself but I can already see the gear next to the worm gear on the motor has a noticeable split in it. I don't have any replacements on me at the moment so I'll likely not mess with it any further for now, as he still runs mostly fine.
