I guess the new design makes the track switching a bit smoother? Instead of the switch brushing entirely on the rail base.
The old switch did fine but someone in Plarail department thought they can improve just a bit further.
That or they want to cut down on the cost of producing the unique switch, since this looks the same as R-11, R-12, R-15, and so on.
