Just a Trackmaster indeed, but younger viewers may be unaware that it’s one of @Super ’s earlier customs, and it led me to re-read through the thread in which it appears, which is full of truly inspirational ideas and examples.

We’re getting Sierra Railway No. 3 in Plarail before Bachmann, Lionel or any other scale model company (barring one H0 scale kit), and they’re basing it on my favourite production in its “filmography” besides Little House on the Prairie…

…but they’re making it tender-drive like they did with Olton Hall. 😞 Deal breaker. Why didn’t they simply retool one of the loco-drive Western engines from the Disney Dream Railway range to resemble it? Surely if they do make the Polar Express, it would be loco-drive since Pere Marquette 1225 is much wider and would “gladly” accept a C battery. I know one of my own scratch-built locos is (currently) tender-drive, but I only did that so I could fit wiring in the boiler for headlamp and firebox lighting.

On a more positive note, I think it might be the first Plarail engine with a removable funnel. Good to know the Hogwarts Express apparently paved the way for other famous non-Japanese steamers like I hoped it would.

Super I meant Back to the Future Part III, the film this is based on. Oddly, I’ve only seen the first and third films but never the second one; now that I know it has a Roger Rabbit cameo followed by Charles Fleischer himself showing up (same director, Robert Zemeckis), that might give me an incentive to fill that blank.

SR No. 3 - a.k.a. the Movie Star Locomotive - is just the real loco used to portray Central Pacific 131 in this scene; though the real 131 was a 4-4-0. There’s no separate announcement for a general Plarail release of it.

Regarding LHOTP: mum and I binge-watched it last August and got up to Season 4 until it became too “dark” (and overly Christian) for us and we didn’t watch S5 and later. Unsurprisingly, one of my fav. episodes of it was “The Runaway Caboose” and I’m happy TOMY will unintentionally allow certain buyers to re-enact it with the exact loco (and a motorised Bruno repainted yellow and black).

This is so cool I am shocked but so happy .
I wonder when we will get the plarail polar express .
So it seems there are doing these universal trains with real class track and some accessory .

So the polar express could with a observation carriage hopefully .
I am sure this will be part of the plarail gold series.

I do wonder if plarail will make more Disneyland trains . As it has been a while since they have done them but would they make a new unpowered yet more accurate locomotive tooling with a huge gaint tender which would feel out of place . They did big thunder recently so I could totally see that happening .

I would personally like to see a plarail SP 4449, like the one that appears in the movie Tough Guys. Though as it is less known than the Polar express or the ones plarail is already releasing, we shouldn’t expect this. Still would be nice though.

It makes me wonder of this Plarail Back to The Future locomotive makes a good Custom of Beau from Thomas & Friends.

If I get two of these, I’d love to make a tender powered Beau out of one of these.

I was gonna use two other Plarail locomotives to make him, but I couldn’t due to them being discontinued & now probably now getting more rare.

Probably for Beau, I would have to swap out his siderods for shorter ones for more accuracy & redo his windows.

I know that the Plarail Hogwarts Express made a good Plarail Hall Class custom due to the near perfect proportions to the real Hall Classes on the locomotive section.

I would have certainly accepted if it was a battery tender and engine driven for sure.

I do predict that due to the distance from the front wheels and the tip of the cow catcher, this tender pushed engine is really going to have trouble bumping into things even remotely close to the rails. This was even evident with Plarails remake of the Yoshitsune with its long front end with cow catcher and that wasn’t even tender driven.

Enough issues from me, I am thrilled the Plarail is getting into brand new types of trains from different countries (even if I prefer other powers) as they may have run out of ideas of Japan only trains. Thank you Plarails I do appreciate you👍

The Wikipedia page for this loco, Sierra No.3, makes very interesting reading. The loco has appeared in at least 37 movies (the first in 1920) and even more TV series and one-off shows. The possibilities for customs must be almost infinite!

Back to the Future release?

Still going over in my mind whether I want one of these.

Pros:

This would be a fantastic start of some Custom builds because of the exclusive feature of this train, The two removable Smoke Stacks are a modifiers dream and one other, fantastic feature that I just realized (see image below) that really jingle my bells and may turn me to order on for the explicit purpose of modification,

Wishes

Wish the wood in the Tender looked a little more real but this is nit picking on my part as that can be created in a custom.
Wish it wasn’t a Tender, Push train and I am really curious, if a buyer would use this train as it was made for and the Delorean is meant to be pushed too, how that will work when the engine is pushed askew. Have to wait for the videos on this.

What self respecting modifier isn’t tickled to see this. An open Cab area where, because of all the room in the engine shell because its a Tender driven engine, makes for a perfect place for a realistic flickering red LED light replicating a fire in the firebox. Wow, this changes everything for me. This feature should have been included in every Tender Driven train….right?

Either that or a micro mist maker (or smoke unit) and colour-changing LED in the smokebox to emulate the Presto log smoke effects in the actual scene; Doc Brown throws them into the firebox to build up enough pressure and heat so the loco can reach 88mph (to get the DeLorean back to 1985).

Wonder if they’ll also make a Jules Verne variant if this set does well. Hopefully it would break the loading gauge like the Flying Ace biplane so it could have most of the right proportions; it wouldn’t need to clear tunnels or risers anyway.

Super Has there been any releases with black side rods before, off hand I can’t think of any.

The TOMY versions of Spencer and Emily come to mind, but those are technically dark grey.

I think the cab lighting is a really cool idea, that could help people look over the massive box pushing the loco from behind!
As for the wood you could probably use a small brush with a couple of shades of brown and some black wash to give it a bit more depth, and maybe a bit of black paint around the front end to make the join between the body of the tender and the wood chunks a bit more random and believable.

And I’ve also just spotted an incredible feature that we only started seeing last year on professional models and this one has it, that being the contrast between the shiny boiler and the matt smokebox that makes it look incredibly premium, although I really wish they came up with a more compact tender coupling, because the giant gap between the loco and the tender is incredibly distracting!

I didn’t notice this until you mention it and I agree with you DDO, nice spot. Staring deeper into this its really not a shiny boiler but more of a textured, non-shiny, finish that I really like and this combined with that flat black smokebox is really getting me on board to acquire one. Because you have got me into looking at this model deeper…..I didn’t notice before that the engine has…Black Side Rods…another feature that can be used on other customs. Has there been any releases with black side rods before, off hand I can’t think of any.

I will be glad to have anything that is different from their usual line but hope they don’t overdo the Western Steamers to the point that they become redundant. I do think like you and think a couple they should look into is the Pere Marquette 1225 (a train that I have rode on and still runs as a tourist train today because of the Polar Express movie in my little part of the world). The Orient Express would be another as it has more of a world view rather than just the US.

I am currently laughing at myself as checking on tender driven engines I remembered that I had collected quite a few Plarail C-57’s many years ago because it had an open Cab like this new Back to the Future release because I had plans on re-doing my custom Polar Express Engine using one for the specific reason of installing a LED fire box, exactly what we are talking about but this geezer forgot all about. Took a at my box full of C-57’s with all the parts I accumulated back then and sure enough, there is an open cab. Probably the only open Cab like this until now because I searched everything way back then.

Okay…its settled, Plarail, I know you are listening….Polar Express and Orient Express….get busy working on those for xmas
